Abstract

Published by Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, (ITK) the national Inuit association in Canada, the Inuktitut magazine is the longest continuously published Inuit magazine in Canada. 13,000 copies are mailed free of charge to 52 Inuit communities in Nunatsiavut (Labrador), Nunavik (northern Quebec), Nunavut and the Inuvialuit Nunangat area of the Northwest Territories. Each issue has several feature articles, commentary, first person stories, editorials, legends, oral history and book reviews.

The title of this periodical has varied over the course of its publication. The first issue appeared in May 1959 under the title Inuktitun, published by The Department of Indian and Northern Affairs (Canada). The Government of Canada continued to publish this magazine until 1988. Over the course of its publishing history, there are other variant names recorded in library catalogues: Inuttitun, Inuttituut, and Inutitut, Inuttutuut. In the early years, separate language editions were published (see ASTIS record 37694). The current edition has three languages, English, Inuktitut (syllabic and roman orthography) and French.  All issues of this magazine are available free of charge on the ITK website.
