Tumivut

Abstract

Tumivut is a trilingual magazine published by Avataq Cultural Institute. The magazine publishes original stories and articles on the history, language, culture, and heritage of Nunavimmiut (Inuit of Nunavik, in northern Quebec). The magazine also reproduces archives and other heritage materials gathered by Avataq's Inuttigut Pirrusiit Documentation Centre, such as oral histories, historical photos, textual records and genealogies. It focuses on knowledge kept in the Nunavik Inuit oral tradition, especially on knowledge shared by Inuit elders, in their own words. Tumivut also publishes articles on the archeology and geography of Nunavik, as well as contemporary Inuit storytelling.

Each issue has a theme, namely a particular community or topic. The magazine has been published on a roughly annual or biannual basis. It is distributed freely in all fifteen Nunavik communities, and is available for sale via Avataq's Nunavik Publications website.
